Design Strategy for UW Libraries Mobile App

Mission

As the part of UW libraries strategy, we suggesting the development of mobile application to make its resources accessible for users of mobile devices, phones. tablets.

The design strategy includes:

Business goals:

  • Reduce costs (minimize overhead)
  • Reduce number of machines at library,
  • Implement digital husky card,
  • Quicker access to online payments,
  • Raise awareness of library special events,
  • Increase accessibility to book reservations,
  • Raise funds for library through outsiders purchasing the app

Marketing / branding goals:

Technological constraints

  • 480 x 320 and 480 x 800 pixel screen sizes
  • Licensing issues with documentation download
  • Comply with accessibility rules
  • Compatible with Windows 7, Android and iPhone devices
  • Run on Blackberry, iPhone

Critical success factors:

Here we suggest some examples of the mobile app pages. Wireframe is designed to fit mobile phone screen in portrait mode.

The intro page of the mobile app

As the mobile app will be integrated with the UW Netid system, it’s expected that users can login to their account using their Netid and password. However, the public that doesn’t have passwords may use guest mode without using Netid.

The main menu of the mobile UW Libraries

The menu lets users to navigate through the mobile app by tapping on one of the five available buttons.

The Events page with a map

The Events part of the mobile app allows to check available events, conferences, meetings in UW libraries on the go. The first page returns the chronological list of events with a name, location and time. After tapping on a particular events, users will see a map where that event is going.

The lower footer will allow to return to a previous page or to the main menu.

The My Account page

The mobile app has the function of managing of existing reservations, checked out books, overdue fees and library card for the public. These data imitates the online accounts of  UW libraries information system and allows to get alerts about possible overdue fees, new books.
